On 17 January, Mercosur and the EU signed one of the most crucial trade agreements of the decade in Asunción, Paraguay. After more than twenty years on hold, the deal entered into force on 1 May, bringing tariff reductions on 90% of goods, access to new markets, and improved trading conditions. While Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay have already approved it internally, the European Parliament still awaits final ratification. A legal avenue grounded in the TFEU could allow trade provisions to start operating much sooner — particularly benefiting Argentina.
