Coffee is an important commodity and a popular beverage. Over 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed in the world every day. Over 90% of coffee production takes place in developing countries, while consumption happens mainly in the industrialized economies. Worldwide, 25 million small producers rely on coffee for a living, over 5 million only in Brazil, where almost a third of the whole world’s coffee is produced.

The United States is currently the world’s largest market for coffee. Annual consumption per capita is just over 4 kg, compared with 5 kg on average in Europe. Consumption in Europe varies from around 10 kg per capita per year in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) to around 3 kg in the United Kingdom and most of Eastern Europe.
