Después de tres décadas de gobierno, el 11 de abril de 2019 el presidente sudanés, Omar al-Bashir, se vio forzado a renunciar al poder como resultado de las incesantes y efectivas movilizaciones por todo el país. Tras la renuncia de Bashir, su sucesor, Mohammed Ahmed Awad Ibn, solicitó a los manifestantes que aceptaran un gobierno militar de transición, pero estos no estaban dispuestos a acatar esta propuesta; desafiaron el toque de queda, y prometieron quedarse en las calles hasta que sus demandas de un gobierno civil fueran escuchadas.

La Corte Penal Internacional creada en 1998 con la firma del Tratado de Roma se propone constituirse como el más alto Tribunal en materia criminal a nivel internacional. Su trabajo encuentra varias limitaciones y depende en gran medida de la cooperación de los Estados. Recientemente, el caso que tuvo lugar en Sudáfrica pone de relieve una vez más esta relación entre Estados y la CPI.
